A Kingdom Temptation

CloseupEdgeEarth meets Heaven

After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, Jesus meets Satan in the remote wilderness. After several  providing several temptations, Satan brings him to a mountain and the rest of the story is presented in Matthew 4:8-11

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you,[d] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”[e]

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

The transluscent layers on one of the sides of the piece was created from multiple cast of resin, some clear casts, some layers showing colors and shapes that depict floating clouds and desert rain showers, sunlight, land and sea masses from earth and transcend even deeper to the depths of hell. My imagination takes me to the Kingdoms  describe in the passage. High above the valley below, I can see the miles and miles of earth, sea and air and the kingdoms promised.

I continue to be drawn to the themes of the cycle of life that center on renewal and rebirth and drawing on contrast between light and dark  in my artwork. I recognize that these are “esoteric” conversations but I am musing at the what is described as a “mystery” in a biblical sense.

The creative process compels me to a spirit of surrender, I know who my enemy is and surrender is the process by which we  succeed.. As Steven Pressfield  put’s it :

“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the un-lived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance. ” and “The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”

Surrender allows me to fuse my thoughts  into the ultimate source. It is space where our lives are coordinated with God’s plan for us. I let go and let mystery of God take over.

My latest mixed media sculptures depict the vastness of nature inspired by summers trips to Taos, Santa Fe and Sedona.  I call the pieces Terraforms- depictions of the desert southwest, where the viewer can have an experience of skyscapes and landscapes that make up the desert and forests of northern Arizona and New Mexico. I add the memories of the ocean of CA, Baja, Hawaii and Alaska coastlines into the works, my time surfing, fishing and diving.

The Mystery of the Resurrection

Resurrection, renewal, rebirth and the cycle of life are themes in my artwork. I recognize that these are “esoteric” conversations but I am musing at the what is described as a “mystery” in a biblical sense.  Knowing who God is a daily dying of yourself, its a surrender for sure.  Each day brings its own theme to the process of life and death when compartmentalized in a 24 hour period. How do we measure life? By the year, decade or generation. It makes a difference. In the maddening pace of current life, life can be measured in a day vs a decade.

My latest piece’s depict the power of nature in a miniature setting. Often I think of my pieces as #Terraforms, depictions of the desert southwest, where the viewer can have an experience of skyscapes and landscapes that make up the desert and forests of northern Arizona and New Mexico. Then I add the memories of the seascapes of CA, Baja and Hawaii coastlines. It’s a heavenly vision for sure.

Spiritual Horizons

A new series of mixed media pieces inspired by Land-Sky-Desert and Oceans entitled” Spiritual Horizons” and will be shown at New City Studio on First Friday, October 3rd in a group show entitled Land and City for more on the show visit https://www.facebook.com/newcitystudio

The mixed media pieces incorporate re purposed wood, casts resins, steel and light which have been my favorite media for the past few years.

This is my first time showing pieces incorporating phosphorescent powders in my resin casts. The effect is an eerie light emitted best seen in a darkened setting. Light is a central theme of my work and unlike previous works which concealed the LED light source, the new pieces incorporate an inner light energized by sunlight or other light sources. Unlike previous “steel boxes” housing my cast pieces, the steel stands take a secondary role, supporting the smallish landscape vignettes, yet notice the archetype in the shape of the stand.

Spiritual Horizons were inspired by my summer travels throughout the southwest visiting and observing deserts, mountains, skies and ocean vistas.  I have vivid memories of a critique from my two person show a year ago. Art critic and fellow artist Richard Bledsoe  mused “Light serves as a powerful metaphor of knowledge, clarity, warmth, spirituality”. My use of light as a media comes through a vastly different source from a year ago. Richard also observed and commented ” Somehow the small cubes seemed to enclose vast tracts of sky and earth”. That is the influence of land that I live.  www.stor-ybox.com

Light From Within

Light fascinates me as an artist and I have been incorporating concealed LED lighting to illuminate what I call my Story Boxes. Several artists and photographers pointed me in the direction of Phosphorescent light and resins. This has opened up many new realms to explore in my own spiritual journey and theme of Light.

These pieces are a continuation of a series of mixed media works using Wood-Resin-Steel and Light. Combining phosphorescent powders mixed in my resin casts as a source of light. Entitled “Light from Within” continues my reflections of time spent on a#spiritual journey to #Taos and #Santa Fe this summer. 9″ x 9″ x 1 1/4″. The steel stands also have cast resins with pearlescent powders and phosphorescent powders. The steel stands have a classic surfboard design that has been part of me and many designs since the 60’s.  See more on www.stor-ybox.com including show dates for the fall.

A Pool That Heals

Bench Horizontal

I have to confess; I fantasized about this bench. The power to #heal would have great value and I coveted a notion that those that sat on this bench would have a supernatural healing of some sort. At the same time remembered the experience of healing that I have had in my own life. How forgiveness healed anger and how prayer has been the key to healing. Other #spiritual musings included the thoughts and notions of altars and sacred spaces and artifacts. Milagros come to mind, religious folk charms that are traditionally used for healing purposes and as votive offerings in Mexico.

From this photo perspective, I am reminded of the coves along the coastline of Prince Wales Island in Alaska. I see the eye of a whale in the piece, or some deep water fish possessing bioluminescence ability. Additional photographs depict other images, but I do continue to focus on the notion of healing and the thought “Be still and know that I am God”.  Nature has a way of healing and connecting you to the Divine.
