“A New Covenant”

fb
New works Jan 2015

A wooden shard, cast and layered in translucent resin, fashioned as an oblique triangle and suspended against a dark primordial landscape. A haunting archetype of an outstretched body hung on a rugged cross.  Light permeates the translucent layers of the work and exposes small white bowls on a table containing the symbols of the “New Covenant”; Broken Bread & Poured Wine.

In this work, the wood is the archetype representing the earth element and the cycle of life. There are two distinct edges and surfaces to the wood; A rough surface representing the ruggedness of the cross and the full humanity of Christ. While a smooth, beveled edge representing the perfected life provided by the grace of God’s New Covenant.

Spiritual Echos1 Large e-mail view

Translucent layers of resin, colored with deep royal purples and pearlecent whites, allows light to penetrate several layers, revealing  the contrast between the heavens and the earth. When the communion station is viewed in the dark (and I am thinking a sanctuary) and when I “light charge”  the sculpture, what reflects back is an eerie internal light emitting blue, aqua and iridescent green light from within the layers. Cloud layers, distant land vistas and the light of twilight show the creation of the Creator.

Light creates a balance of synergy between the surfaces of the mixed media. The dark black/blues and rusts patina on the steel provide a strong contrast between the wood and resin casts. Milky translucent layers “center” the piece, a river of living water with three transparent spheres present in what can be imagined as the river of life. The mood of the piece provides great peace and stillness. Jesus is the Light of the World.

Light Thru Spiritual Horizons

Tranquility-#2 Medium Web view
Somehow the small cross sections in this series, seemed to enclose vast tracts of sky and earth. Phosphorescent layers of blue and aqua provide contrast to the clear layers and provide an inner light. A panorama of clouds float over desert landscapes. The smell of creosote, a natural desert plant in imbued in the wood a former railroad tie, perhaps used in the gold or copper mines of Arizona. Its rough worn surface is a perfect metaphor for the ageless qualities I feel in the desert southwest.

My studio is both for the creation of my work and a sanctuary where I perform the sacred rite of creating art. My hope is that my pieces evoke a sacrosanct and meditative mood.  Prayer and meditation provides you the portal to the spirit of God Himself.

Stargazing and other musings.

Spiritual Horizons series

Have you ever been in the wilderness at the ocean, mountains or desert?  I spent time this summer experiencing the vastness of the lands and skies of  Taos, Santa Fe, Sedona and our Sonoran desert.

“StarGazer” is a piece that is rich in symbolism and the theme of the renewal cycles of earth and the interaction of the basic elements; Air-Water-Earth & Light in depicting the vastness of the heavenly bodies.

Spiritual Thought

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him? Psalm 8:3

” A Pool That Restores”

Closeup PoolREstoresWEB

This is a mixed media piece, 60″ x 23″ x 2.5″.
Alligator wood, combining atmospheric translucent resin casts.  Steel legs; one side 18″ wide tapered  to 12″  with a 34″ height. The other leg is 10″ wide and not tapered.  Steel has a blue-gray and brown patina. A white oak leg brace with cast resin is being added to the 10″ leg for additional stability and incorporate phosphorescent luminescence.

Translucent layers of resin mixed with pearlescent powders; dark blue, green/blue, iridescent blue and royal purple interlaced with layers of copper and gold . Spirit beings are  floating over a darkening sea, perhaps souls translating into new beings, being drawn into a New Earth.

Another perspective from the “edge” of the resin cast. Smooth to the touch, and when I run my hand over the edge, I can’t help but notice that my mind takes me to memories of surfing.

I had a clear vision of how to cast the piece, how the layers could flow. Looking vertically, it mirrors water. Looking horizontally focusing on the edge of the cast, you can see a wide panorama of sky, or a long ocean wave. I realized how smooth the piece has become as the edges have been burnished and the resin is liquid glass. There is a lingering aroma of Alligator Juniper. The whole work invites the viewer to engage with the work and not just with your eyes but through touch and smell.

Working from the Inside Out

Wood-Resin-Steel & Luminescence
Wood-Resin-Steel & Luminescence

I keep focusing on light in and on my work. The light and background in this photographed is a polished steel box, with a very dark patina, almost black. The light comes from a LED light bar hidden by a steel light hood. Beautiful background to photograph this piece entitled “Canyon Spirits”.

I was inspired by the atmosphere of lands and skies of northern New Mexico and Arizona, combined with memories of living on the ocean. For a color palette, I use several shades of blues, greens, purples, coppers and pearl white. Favorite woods: Mesquite, White Oak,  Cedar, Hickory and Walnut.  This piece is re-purposed wood, not sure of the hardwood but once carried trains throughout the south west.
Welded a steel stand for this piece in the form of a classic surfboard shape and finishing the stand with a pearl white resin layer and then add a layer of clear aqua phosphorescent. http://www.stor-ybox.com to see my online gallery. This piece is sold but I have others.

You’re blessed when you get your inside world-Your Mind and Heart put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. The Message

People are like stained – glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within. Elizabeth Kubler Ross.

Most of these new pieces are are inspired by this past summer visits to Taos, Santa Fe and Sedona.  Read about the works on Spiritual Horizon page. This is a very limited edition so email me and I will reserve a piece. Shipping is free, and included with each piece is a very powerful UV battery operated light. 2-5 minutes with the light will recharge the phosphorescent powders which creates the internal luminescent qualities.

Sacred Places-Sacred Light

Light Sconce1 Fence Standard e-mail viewAs the story goes, the creation of light was the first command given by the Creator.

“Light serves as a powerful metaphor of knowledge, clarity, warmth, spirituality. In art light can serve as a stand-in for the experience of higher states of consciousness. Artists through the ages have appreciated the attractive properties of light and incorporated its qualities into their works. From the reflective gold and jewels of Byzantine mosaics to the changing atmospherics of the Impressionists, from the dramatic chiaroscuro of the Baroque painters to the electrically powered pieces of contemporary artists, each era has found its own articulation for the divinely originated illumination.” Richard Bledsoe

Somehow the small cross sections  in this series, seemed to enclose vast tracts of sky and earth. They held a sense of great distances and the interplay of atmospheric conditions within the translucent resin casts. Clouds meet air and land near the sea. The smell of creosote, a natural desert plant in imbued in the wood a former railroad tie with years of service in my desert landscape and formerly a header in a territorial arch that once was part of my home/studio.

Light comes from two sources, a hidden LED light source which in turn radiates in the various layers of the piece that were cast with pearlescent and phosphorescent powders. An internal glowing light, a light from within is created with the phosphorescent layers, blues-greens and aqua colors.

There is a sense of reverence in the land around Taos; New Mexico, and Taos is an inspiration to my new work. My studio is both for the creation of my work, and is is a sacred space as well; working as an artist is a religious rite with me at time.I hope that my pieces  evoke a sacred feeling and can be hung in sacred places and created for prayer and meditation where you might feel the shadow of the spirit of God himself.

A Kingdom Temptation

CloseupEdgeEarth meets Heaven

After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, Jesus meets Satan in the remote wilderness. After several  providing several temptations, Satan brings him to a mountain and the rest of the story is presented in Matthew 4:8-11

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you,[d] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”[e]

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

The transluscent layers on one of the sides of the piece was created from multiple cast of resin, some clear casts, some layers showing colors and shapes that depict floating clouds and desert rain showers, sunlight, land and sea masses from earth and transcend even deeper to the depths of hell. My imagination takes me to the Kingdoms  describe in the passage. High above the valley below, I can see the miles and miles of earth, sea and air and the kingdoms promised.
