Sacred Places-Sacred Light

Light Sconce1 Fence Standard e-mail viewAs the story goes, the creation of light was the first command given by the Creator.

“Light serves as a powerful metaphor of knowledge, clarity, warmth, spirituality. In art light can serve as a stand-in for the experience of higher states of consciousness. Artists through the ages have appreciated the attractive properties of light and incorporated its qualities into their works. From the reflective gold and jewels of Byzantine mosaics to the changing atmospherics of the Impressionists, from the dramatic chiaroscuro of the Baroque painters to the electrically powered pieces of contemporary artists, each era has found its own articulation for the divinely originated illumination.” Richard Bledsoe

Somehow the small cross sections  in this series, seemed to enclose vast tracts of sky and earth. They held a sense of great distances and the interplay of atmospheric conditions within the translucent resin casts. Clouds meet air and land near the sea. The smell of creosote, a natural desert plant in imbued in the wood a former railroad tie with years of service in my desert landscape and formerly a header in a territorial arch that once was part of my home/studio.

Light comes from two sources, a hidden LED light source which in turn radiates in the various layers of the piece that were cast with pearlescent and phosphorescent powders. An internal glowing light, a light from within is created with the phosphorescent layers, blues-greens and aqua colors.

There is a sense of reverence in the land around Taos; New Mexico, and Taos is an inspiration to my new work. My studio is both for the creation of my work, and is is a sacred space as well; working as an artist is a religious rite with me at time.I hope that my pieces  evoke a sacred feeling and can be hung in sacred places and created for prayer and meditation where you might feel the shadow of the spirit of God himself.

40 Days and 40 Nights

The Mystery of Days
The Day
The Mystery of 40 Nights
The Night

I continue to be drawn to the themes of the cycle of life that center on renewal and rebirth and drawing on contrast between light and dark  in my artwork. I recognize that these are “esoteric” conversations but I am musing at the what is described as a “mystery” in a biblical sense.

The creative process compels me to a spirit of surrender, I know who my enemy is and surrender is the process by which we  succeed.. As Steven Pressfield  put’s it :

“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the un-lived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance. ” and “The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”

Surrender allows me to fuse my thoughts  into the ultimate source. It is space where our lives are coordinated with God’s plan for us. I let go and let mystery of God take over.

My latest mixed media sculptures depict the vastness of nature inspired by summers trips to Taos, Santa Fe and Sedona.  I call the pieces Terraforms- depictions of the desert southwest, where the viewer can have an experience of skyscapes and landscapes that make up the desert and forests of northern Arizona and New Mexico. I add the memories of the ocean of CA, Baja, Hawaii and Alaska coastlines into the works, my time surfing, fishing and diving.

The Mystery of the Resurrection

Resurrection, renewal, rebirth and the cycle of life are themes in my artwork. I recognize that these are “esoteric” conversations but I am musing at the what is described as a “mystery” in a biblical sense.  Knowing who God is a daily dying of yourself, its a surrender for sure.  Each day brings its own theme to the process of life and death when compartmentalized in a 24 hour period. How do we measure life? By the year, decade or generation. It makes a difference. In the maddening pace of current life, life can be measured in a day vs a decade.

My latest piece’s depict the power of nature in a miniature setting. Often I think of my pieces as #Terraforms, depictions of the desert southwest, where the viewer can have an experience of skyscapes and landscapes that make up the desert and forests of northern Arizona and New Mexico. Then I add the memories of the seascapes of CA, Baja and Hawaii coastlines. It’s a heavenly vision for sure.

Light From Within

Light fascinates me as an artist and I have been incorporating concealed LED lighting to illuminate what I call my Story Boxes. Several artists and photographers pointed me in the direction of Phosphorescent light and resins. This has opened up many new realms to explore in my own spiritual journey and theme of Light.

These pieces are a continuation of a series of mixed media works using Wood-Resin-Steel and Light. Combining phosphorescent powders mixed in my resin casts as a source of light. Entitled “Light from Within” continues my reflections of time spent on a#spiritual journey to #Taos and #Santa Fe this summer. 9″ x 9″ x 1 1/4″. The steel stands also have cast resins with pearlescent powders and phosphorescent powders. The steel stands have a classic surfboard design that has been part of me and many designs since the 60’s.  See more on www.stor-ybox.com including show dates for the fall.

Canyon Spirits

GorgeDynastyWEB9-6I often wonder if inanimate objects can absorb the spirit of God. I look at the rafters in my church or the concrete floors and get a sense  of the filling of the spirit even in innate building materials. I sense the image of an invisible God in canyon walls or a space that the elect are called to worship.

Continuing to work with lighting with phosphorescent powders in my resin castings. Interesting effect but a deeper meaning with light emanating from the piece. At the same time, viewing  the resin casts of these pieces through a window, provides a glimpse of wide open desert and mountain skyscapes.

Spirit of the Canyons is a mixed media piece incorporating Wood-Resin-Steel & Light.
